After a long qualifying campaign that went down to a penalty shootout, the Socceroos will be playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will lead the side in Qatar.
The Socceroos’ delivered their best performance in the competition when they got to the round of 16 in Germany 2006, but since then they have not won a single game in the last two editions.
Coach Graham Arnold believes in giving younger players opportunities in recent years and the side will be a mix of youth and experience to make a balance.
Arnold has selected teenager forward Garang Kuol(18 years old), who will join Newcastle United in January, in their 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup.
“The kid just needs to be himself,” said Australia coach Graham Arnold.
“Garang has shown how he can change a game. He has zero fear and he wants to entertain.“, said Australia coach Graham Arnold.
“It’s been a unique and difficult qualification campaign. And we now arrive in Qatar with an exciting squad which will do everything to make Australia proud on the world stage,” Arnold said. After securing qualification for the fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup, the sixth appearance in total. The Socceroos will be looking to progress through the group stages for the first time since 2006.
The Socceroos will start off their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 campaign against defending champions France at Al Janoub Stadium on Tuesday, 22 November.
